2009 Solar Decathlon Teams Announced

The teams for the next Solar Decathlon have been selected and are already hard at work. The next Solar Decathlon will take place in October 2009 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. See the full list of teams and watch this site for more details in the coming months.

The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The 2009 Solar Decathlon is the fourth competition; the inaugural event was held in 2002, the second in 2005, and the third in 2007.

From Oct. 1 through Oct. 21, 2009, college and university teams from around the world—the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, Germany, and Spain—join the competition's organizers and sponsors in Washington, D.C., to assemble a "solar village" on the National Mall. In addition to the team houses, the solar village features energy efficiency and renewable energy exhibits and activities for the visiting public. Houses are open for public tours during the event—from Oct. 8 through Oct. 18. During public tour hours, some of the team houses may be closed for competition purposes. The competition itself occurs concurrently, until an overall winner is announced.

The Solar Decathlon is an educational project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and is supported by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and event and team sponsors from the private sector.
